August 24, 2023[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Have you too felt the line between work and leisure blurring all too often? Do you also find it difficult to maintain a work-life balance? Or even find any time for yourself at all?
You’re not alone. There are thousands, if not, millions of others like you who frequently find themselves in the same shoes: finding it difficult to maintain a work-life balance and then suffering because of it. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]
Is Work-Life Balance Important After All?
Yes. Unquestionably, indisputably, yes.
Not having a balance between your work and life can be detrimental to your mental and eventually, physical health. The most common way a work-life disbalance affects employees negatively is through the development of chronic stress.
Chronic stress can be deadly, for it can be the cause of other psychological and mental issues. According to WebMD, stress and depression have a bidirectional relationship. One can cause the other, and both can make each other worse. Similarly, stress can also cause insomnia, anxiety, hypertension, and aches in the body.
One extremely destructive result of stress due to overworking is burnout. Zippia states that 77% of employees have experienced burnout at least once in their current lives. An individual experiences burnout when they are completely drained of their energy, which can mean a loss of motivation and decreased productivity.
What Does it Mean for the Company?
Of course, employees experiencing stress or being burned out is not good for the company either. Decreased productivity and loss of motivation means no work gets done, which can hinder the company from reaching its goals in the desired time frame. How Do We Maintain Work-Life Balance?
According to a Harvard Business Review article, work-life balance is a cycle (Lupu & Castro, 2021). What is meant by this is that instead of treating work-life balance as some achievement, individuals need to understand that it is an ongoing process.
To attain a balance between work and personal life, we need to first understand that the status quo perhaps isn’t the right way, and some things need to change. We need to denormalize the current way of doing things and reflect on our choices.
Think about how you feel about your current situation. Does it give you a serotonin boost, or does it fill you with feelings of dread? If it is the latter, there is certainly a need for change.
The way to achieve a work-life balance is prioritization. Think of what is important to you. For instance, if you want to spend more time with your family, you will need to bring them a few notches up on your priority list. Make room for them by pushing out other, unnecessary tasks you have cluttered yourself with.
Lastly, you’ll need to be disciplined. Sometimes, doing something good for yourself can be hard. And it is easy to fall back into your old, toxic habits. This is where discipline comes in. You’ll have to
