Engaging in Volunteerism: Making a Difference in Your Community
August 24, 2023[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Equality, diversity, and inclusion are not just pop words, spoken to appear “woke.” They are some very important principles that need to be incorporated into our workspaces for the ultimate happiness of our employees.
In 1962, women in the US earned only 62% of the earning of their male counterparts. The figure improved in 2010, with women earning 81% of what the men in the industry earn.
While the figure may have risen over the years, the question remains: do our workplaces have gender equality?
Well, as it happens, we do have gender equality, but there’s still a lot more to be done. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]
Gender Inequality in the Workplace
Gender inequality in the workplace can take several forms. Some are overt and immediately discernible, such as women working just as hard as men but not getting fairly compensated. Others are covert. For instance, women encounter obstacles when trying to advance into leadership positions, or face microaggression in the shape of taunts, insensitivity, and offensive remarks.
In addition to unequal pay, gender inequality can take the shape of bias, unfavorable recruitment strategies, and even sexual harassment. Bright HR states that a staggering 23% of women at work have faced sexual harassment, yet only 8% go on to report it. Furthermore, a larger percentage of women face work-related mental health issues than men.
All of these issues are important; for the individuals at the workplace and the workplace itself. Even more important is to find the solutions to these problems and implement them at your workplace, so that your employees have a wholesome, safe space to work.
The Fight Against Gender Inequality
The fight against gender equality is yours and mine. Gender equality at our workplaces will not flourish just because of flowery speeches and turning our workspaces pink for Women’s Day. No, it will take some solid and tangible steps to remove gender discrimination from its roots and create an environment in which every individual can thrive, regardless of their gender.
We need to select leaders who are allies in this fight against gender inequality. They are the ones who will set an example for others to follow. We can begin by having equal opportunities for both men and women and judging people only based on their skills and performances.
As we acknowledge the fact that women face invisible barriers bolstered by an unfair system, we should work to remove its effects. We can do this by providing training opportunities to women and flexi-time.
Lastly, and most importantly, organizations should practice the policy of transparent salaries. This will not only enhance the employees’ trust in the organization but also play a part in reducing the gender wage gap.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”395″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
